Rare early 1900s shark tooth sword (tebute) from the Gilbert Islands (Kiribati). Made from coconut palm wood and shark teeth. A unique artifact with historical significance. Typically sells for $1,200 - $2,000.
The sword is made from seasoned wood of the coconut palm with cutting edges made from shark's teeth attached with fine fibrous cords. Most of these swords were destroyed by the maritime visitors to the islands. Kiribati has a history of contrived and ritualized duels. A true collector's item.
